The linotype machine is a wonderful mechanism which not only sets the type as an operator presses down "typewriter" keys, but casts the matter in solid lines of metal, just the width required for the page or column. The operator strikes his keys and, as it were, types down his line of words. Up in the machine, each in their respective slots, are metal shapes known as matrices. Each has engraved in its edge a letter of the alphabet.
